Afghan Rulers Used Discarded British Equipment to Locate Afghans That Served With Allied Troops, Investigation Learns

A confidential source has disclosed the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities left behind classified devices enabling the militant group to identify Afghans that had served with western forces.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands at Risk

The source, called Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the information breach were advised to change residences and switch their mobile numbers to protect themselves from the Taliban.

MPs are currently examining official response of a serious leak of private information concerning almost nineteen thousand individuals who had asked to move to the UK to flee the regime.

How the Leak Occurred

An electronic document including confidential details, such as identities, contact details and sometimes household data, was inadvertently disclosed by a staff member stationed at British military command in February 2022.

The incident came to light months later, when the names of nine people who had sought to settle in Britain surfaced on online platforms.

Regime's Resources

Many believe there's a false assumption that the Taliban lack the same sort of facilities that we have,” Person A informed the committee.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain a contact number, they are able to track your precise location. That is what intelligence groups achieved.”

Under inquiry about regarding if authorities possessed advanced decryption, the source confirmed: “They have complete capability.”

Consequences of the Information Leak

Initial findings provided to the committee suggested that approximately fifty kin and associates of people concerned by the leak had been executed.

A legal restriction about the breach was implemented in August 2023 and blocked relevant facts regarding the matter from being made public until mid-2025.

Safety Measures

Due to legal constraints, the source and the non-governmental organization she was working with advised affected households they were assisting that they had “concerns that certain devices had been compromised”.

“We recommended that they moved when possible and changed their phone numbers. These represented the crucial data that, if the Taliban acquired these details, would lead to identification and capture,” she said.

Disputed Conclusions

Person A argued that an official review carried out by an ex-government employee had been wrong to determine that the obtaining of the information by militant forces was “minimally impact current risk levels”.

“The thing to remember is that affected people are not confronting the Taliban; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to former occupations.”

She detailed disturbing treatment endured by affected individuals, involving electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.

“Instances include young kids who have had bones crushed to pressure the family to say where someone is,” she testified.
