An Account of Unexpected Kindness: When a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Floor

During the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to book a place to stay after getting there, but when I arrived, a big convention was happening and all the backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I thought maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – but quickly found that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate 24 hours. Unsure of quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I boarded public transport and found myself drifting towards a gaming venue, reasoning it was a place to spend those hours in an establishment that stayed open through the night. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for acing the admissions interview the following day, however, being a broke student, I couldn’t afford.

The world needs more folks like that woman.

I must have looked confused as a young woman saw me walking aimlessly through the city center and inquired if everything was alright. I explained my predicament and immediately she offered I could sleep on the floor in her student dorm at ANU – a perfect solution, as that’s where the important interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided a meal: one of the sandwiches she brought back her work shift. I was able to use warm shower facilities and a protected spot to rest for the evening.

With hindsight, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she accepted as a woman allowing a male stranger she’d just met sleep on her floor. At that time I was in a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I am astonished she offered that help – and remain incredibly thankful.

I never did go to that university, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of kindness. It is my wish life has repaid her good deed abundantly. We could all use more people like that woman.
