Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Charity
Passing on undesired offerings can be seen as a little discourteous – except if it's done for a noble purpose.
A Charitable Sale
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 presents received by her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. This unusual assortment reportedly features objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
These items, combined, are worth an estimated €800,000. They will be put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Italian auction firm. A date remains to be announced, but the intention is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the revenue donated to a selection of charitable causes.
Storage Room Collection
The presents are said to be locked away in a repository on the third floor of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni furthermore intending to auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been sitting unused over a long period.
The detailed catalog is yet to be made public, but some insight were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The question centered on whether a legal value limit was being respected. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.
A Global Assortment of Gifts
Notable gifts feature:
- A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the former US president.
- A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
- Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the oddest gifts included the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," one might note.
Diplomatic Context
Meloni has been credited, mostly from her allies, with building relationships with global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the global scene once again.
The forthcoming sale highlights a novel approach to handle the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a time in office.
