David Raya Backs Squad Depth as Key to Multiple Trophy Challenge
The Spanish shot-stopper has stated that intense competition for starting positions is propelling Arsenal's exceptional performance, with the goalkeeper confident that the team's roster under Mikel Arteta is so remarkable that they can challenge for multiple honors this season.
Stunning Wins Showcase Arsenal's Strength
Arsenal's latest 4-0 triumph over Atlético Madrid marked their six consecutive wins and 10th success in 12 matches. With only three goals conceded—the fewest at this point in the team's legacy—Arsenal have secured a narrow advantage at the top of the table and a flawless start in the European competition after three outings.
Squad Changes and Versatility Crucial to Success
The goalkeeper has featured in nearly every game, aside from one Carabao Cup fixture, but Arteta has consistently rotated the team following heavy spending on new signings. When asked about chasing several pieces of silverware, Raya responded, "Yes, I think so. Our squad strength is amazing. We have numerous options who can perform in two, three, or four roles."
For instance, against Atlético, Mikel Merino was introduced as a forward and can also play as a central midfielder or attacking midfielder. That versatility is available to the manager, and he's using it to our advantage. It's looking extremely promising, and that depth is very important for us.
Rivalry Drives Performance
The Spain international added, "That provides an extra level in training and games because if you slack off, your place is at risk in a fraction of a second. That fosters intense rivalry in sessions and during matches, which is really, really important, and the whole squad accepts it."
Strong Defense a Team Achievement
The team have let in just a single goal from regular play this season, and Raya has faced only one shot on target in their last three wins against three opponents.
"It's a collective effort from the forwards to the goalie," Raya explained. "Each player is committed, determined not to give anything away, and we aim to intercept passes prior to it crossing the midfield. If we intercept, we can launch a fast break. It's crucial for everyone to feel this mentality, and opponents aren't creating many chances, which is perfect."
