Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after former President Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and stated they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Content That Triggered the Controversy
The clip, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who formerly worked in military or intelligence capacities.
"Similar to us, you all swore an pledge to protect and uphold this founding document," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "Currently, the dangers to our constitution don't only come from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are clear, you can refuse improper directives, you can decline improper directives, you have to reject unlawful commands. No one has to execute directives that break the legal system or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Angry Reply
The recorded statement seemed to prompt a angry reply from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he stated: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats issued a combined announcement condemning the comments.
"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they stated. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all worked our nation with exceptional national pride and distinction. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous calls for execution against elected officials, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with protective services "to guarantee the safety of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these extreme online messages and recant his dangerous rhetoric before he causes harm," the announcement continued.
Representatives' Firm Reaction
The representatives who appeared in the video also published a response.
"We serve as former service members and security experts who value this country and took an pledge to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or incitement will stop us from that sacred obligation."
"The significant point is that the former president considers it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to reiterate the statutes," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their backs as they execute their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to follow only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "Every American must come together and condemn the president's requests for our execution and political violence. This is a time for principled stance."
Additional Political Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and posted on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."
He continued: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, every American – regardless of party – should denounce this immediately and absolutely."
The Conservative official defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "treason", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of Congress advising military personnel to ignore directives, I think that's historic in American history."
The GOP official also according to sources told media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the violation of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to parse the wording and establish all that."
White House Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when asked by a journalist, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the official declared. "We see current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to orchestrate a video message to members of the national defense, to current military personnel urging them to ignore the executive's lawful orders."
She added: "The purity of our defense system relies on the chain of command, and if that system is compromised, it can result in people getting killed, it can lead to disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are basically promoting."
