El Kaabi's Spectacular Strike Secures The Atlas Lions' Triumph Over Comoros in Africa Cup of Nations Opening Match.

The the Moroccan side shook off a anxious start to defeat Comoros in the competition's opening game on the weekend, thanks to the Real Madrid attacker and substitute Ayoub El Kaabi in the second half.

It was a far from convincing display, though, from the strongly favored hosts, who are ranked 97 places higher than the small Indian Ocean nation in the world rankings and were forced to toil hard for the victory in wet conditions at Rabat's Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.

Tense Beginning and Missed Chances

The hosts failed to convert an early spot-kick and were locked at 0-0 at the interval despite dominating the ball, finally opening the scoring in the 11th minute of the second half.

The goal came when Noussair Mazraoui showed great skill to keep the ball in play before slipping it across for Brahim Díaz to calmly pass into the net.

Every first match is never easy but we came good in the second period,” said manager Regragui.

El Kaabi's Moment of Magic

The tension was subsequently eased by a moment of sheer genius from substitute El Kaabi. Just ten minutes following coming on, the striker connected with a ball into the box with a stunning overhead kick in the 74th minute, making it two and sealing the win.

Earlier in the match, the hosts could have been ahead in the 11th minute when a penalty was awarded for a foul on Brahim Díaz. However, Soufiane Rahimi penalty was saved by Comoros goalkeeper Yannick Pandor.

The Visitors' Defiant Stand and Late Chance

The underdogs comfortably held their more illustrious opponents at bay until the Moroccans' individual talent in the end made the difference.

Goalkeeper Pandor pulled off several further fine saves to limit the score as the match wore on, although Comoros did have a clear opportunity for an equaliser shortly following the first goal, with Rafiki Saïd shooting straight at Morocco goalkeeper Bounou.

Fitness Concern for Morocco

The victory was partially marred by an injury to the skipper, Romain Saïss, who was forced off in the 18th minute apparently in tears.

The defender had only returned to the international setup last month following a year’s layoff due to ankle surgery.

The win continues the team's historic run of successive victories to 19, surpassing the old record of 15 set by Spain between 2008 and 2009.
