We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted earlier today that depict the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures were from relied on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
