The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
