The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Complete Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven games for the Spanish giants, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

During his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to secure a last eight place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his age and experience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering the club's famous youth academy.

He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to play for either country at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team pursue future success.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he said following the win at Manchester.
