Truce Offers Little Respite from Harsh Elements

Although a ceasefire has been in effect since October, humanitarian organizations state that residents do not have the adequate shelter necessary to survive frequent cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which took in the victims, reported on this week that the dead include a pair of adult females, a young female, and a man.

Separately, the local health authority announced on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant died of extreme cold overnight.

"The world has allowed us to experience loss of life in every possible way," said a family member after the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Buried in Shelter Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, three members of a one family — elderly a man, his 15-year-old relative, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an eight-metre high wall collapsed onto their tent in a area near the sea of the city. No fewer than 5 additional people were hurt in the incident.

Their relatives on that day started removing the debris that had buried their family and reconstructing the temporary homes for those who remained.

"While 'bombings and shootings have slowed' under the truce, they have not ceased," the spokesperson told reporters at a press conference in Geneva by video link from Gaza City. "Therefore what the world now calls quiet would be considered a catastrophe anywhere else," he said.

Another Cold Season of Struggle
